A deteriorated crown will let water and melting snow run into the interior spaces of a chimney where it can damage the masonry, chimney liner, fireplace damper, firebox and home building materials.
When chimney masonry is compromised, the result can be interior damage as well as structural damage that causes the chimney to lean and possibly collapse. If the masonry is severely damaged, chimney rebuilding may be necessary.
Waterproofing the Masonry and Crown
After repairs have been made and your chimney is in sound shape once again, we recommend having us apply a strong water sealant to the masonry surfaces and the chimney crown.
This sealant will prevent water from getting into cracks and causing future leaks. It’s a breathable coating that allows built-up moisture to escape while keeping water out.
